 The person suspected of shooting and killing Maui police officer Suzanne O. in Paia has been recognized by Maui police.


The 38-year-old Clembert Kaneholani is currently being detained without the prospect of release on bond.


He is charged with two counts of felon in possession of ammunition, first-degree murder, and second-degree attempted murder. Police said that at around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, they received a call reporting that an unknown somebody had entered their property and shot them.


Maui authorities Chief John Pelletier told Hawaii News Now that when authorities arrived in the area of the Paia Sugar Mill, they saw a man firing what they thought was a gun.


"Our cop was shot in the chest," Pelletier said, and although attempts were made to preserve her life, she passed away.Pelletier described the officer as a real hero for the profession and the community.

He said, "We are grateful for her service, and she represented the best among us." "This is a complete catastrophe. Today is a serious day in our community's and the Maui Police Department's history.
