The Chicago Bears are a Chicago-based professional American football team. The Bears are a member club of the National Football Conference North Division in the National Football League. Nine NFL Championships, including one Super Bowl and eight before the AFL-NFL merger, have been won by the Bears.
Williams, the first overall pick in the preseason, looked promising in the Chicago Bears' 33-6 victory over the Buffalo Bills last week. He oversaw two drives that resulted in field goals.
The 22-year-old Southern Californian ran out of the pocket for a 13-yard gain on a third-and-9 play, and he also completed four of seven attempts for 95 yards. Even though he wasn't flawless
Williams almost missed an interception on a play that was called back by a Bills defensive penalty
—the quarterback managed the Bears to gain 152 yards and seven first downs on 20 plays spread over two possessions.
A minute into the fourth quarter, Bears linebacker Micah Baskerville made the game decider when he blocked a pass intended for Frank Gore Jr.
by Shane Buechele and returned it 53 yards for a touchdown, putting Chicago ahead 19-6. Ian Wheeler scored on runs of seven and eight yards in the last six minutes,
while Velus Jones scored on a four-yard run in the third quarter. Josh Allen had a 7-yard run and completed 2 of 3 passes for 22 yards for Buffalo, despite only being able to play the first quarter of the Bills' preseason game.
After three straight runs, Chicago's opening drive came to a standstill at Buffalo's 12, forcing the Bears to settle for a 30-yard field goal from Cairo Santos.
Under pressure, Williams mishandled fellow rookie Rome Odunze in the right corner of the end zone, ending the second drive at Buffalo's 15.
Williams did not mishandle the ball on his other two incompletions. Moore made a sliding catch,
only to have a defender jar the ball loose after Kmet mishandled an easy pass.
