 Following an exciting last day of competition, China and the United States finished with forty gold medals apiece at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. According to NBC, this is the first time a tie for the most gold medals has ever occurred at the Summer Olympics. Li Wenwen won the gold medal in the women's weightlifting (+81kg) event on Sunday, giving China an early gold medal. After that, the US brought home a gold of its own when Jennifer Valente successfully defended her cycling women's omnium championship.

Then, in the last women's basketball competition of the Olympics, the Americans won their 40th gold medal. To win its eighth consecutive Olympic gold, the United States had to overcome France in a thrilling thriller by a 10-point margin in the second half.

The American squad's accomplishments went well beyond the top step of the podium. With 126 medals in all, the Americans have won the most at the Summer Olympics since the Los Angeles Games in 1984. Los Angeles will host the Summer Olympics again in 2028.

When it came down to it, the United States won gold in women's basketball for the seventh time in a row. On Sunday, the US earned five medals in all, including a silver in the women's 76kg freestyle wrestling, a bronze in the men's water polo, and a silver as a team in women's volleyball.



The United States defeated China with 39 gold medals to 38 at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago. In total, the US took home 113 medals from Tokyo. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, the Americans outperformed Great Britain and China, winning 46 gold medals to their 27.

When the Games are held in Los Angeles in four years, the US is predicted to win the medal standings. When competing on home soil, nations often fare well in the medal standings, and the US, which is accustomed to dominating the Summer Olympics, will be particularly eager to contribute. The US hasn't won the Winter Olympics since 1932, which makes them a different tale. Norway, a country with a population of less than 6 million, has won the past two Winter Games.
