J.J. McCarthy, the rookie quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, will require knee surgery and be sidelined indefinitely following tests that indicated a meniscus problem, according to reports from NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero on Tuesday.
Later, during an earlier than planned media session, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell disclosed to reporters that McCarthy had suffered a meniscus tear in his right knee.
Regarding the injury's timeline, that will be decided during the procedure depending on what O'Connell stated on Tuesday. McCarthy would only miss a few weeks if the meniscus could be cut, according to Rapoport. McCarthy would have to miss "many months" if a complete repair was necessary.
McCarthy missed practice on Monday due to a condition that was initially thought to be knee soreness, but additional testing identified a surgically necessary issue. McCarthy had a promising performance in his NFL preseason debut on Saturday, scoring two touchdowns. On the Vikings' second drive, McCarthy replaced starting quarterback Sam Darnold and got off to a slow start, intercepting a pass on his fourth play. However, he became more comfortable after that, concluding the game with 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception during his six drives. He also added two 18-yard rushes.
"I give J.J. credit for clearly being able to play," O'Connell remarked on Tuesday. "Despite the injury, he continued to play and ended the game with a second touchdown pass. He was taken out at that point because he had kind of reached the snap count I was hoping to get him through the game, but he never believed it would be something that would keep him from playing in the football game."
This injury will, in one way or another, throw off the Vikings' preparation schedule for their rookie quarterback. "I had a very clear-cut plan and was going to continue through that with J.J. on the field, getting more and more reps and obviously coming off a performance like he had where we felt strongly about where he was at in his development process," O'Connell stated. "You felt bad for him right away because he possessed the daily discipline and focus that I really wanted in a young player at this position.
Our top priority is to complete this procedure and ensure that all the necessary steps are taken to ensure the best possible recovery for him after it is over. McCarthy was the fifth quarterback chosen overall out of six total selections in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft when the Vikings traded up one spot to select him with the 10th overall pick. Earlier in the offseason, Minnesota also signed Darnold, who is predicted to start in Week 1.
McCarthy, 21, completed a perfect 15-0 record by leading Michigan to the College Football Playoff in 2022 and a national championship in 2023.
We are only a few weeks away from watching actual, competitive professional football, as the NFL preseason is well underway. The goal for thirty-two teams is to make it to the postseason. No team will be counting itself out in August after witnessing the Texans, who finished 3-13-1 in 2022, go from nameless also-rans to division champions in a matter of months the previous season.
the fourteen teams vying to protect the ground they took last year. About half of the teams in a given season have returned the following year in the first three iterations of the 14-team postseason era. Following the 2020 and 2021 seasons, seven made it back to the playoffs, and eight did so just a year ago.
Nor is this just a matter of teams at the margins failing to win. The Packers and Titans, the two top seeds from 2021, did not make the playoffs in 2022. The Bengals, who had advanced to both the AFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl in the two seasons before, had a 9-8 record and were last in the AFC North last season.
J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, suffered an injury on Saturday that could end up keeping him out of action for the entirety of his rookie season. This is disappointing news for all of us who were excited about his preseason debut and the team's victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, 24–23.
McCarthy's right knee has a torn meniscus; following surgery this week, doctors will determine how best to treat it, according to coach Kevin O'Connell. His recovery schedule and whether or not he plays a role in the Vikings' 2024 campaign will depend on that choice.
Sam Darnold will keep honing the team's top offense in the interim in preparation for leading the Vikings against the New York Giants in Week 1.
