Jordan Chiles would forfeit her bronze medal at the Olympics in Paris if the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) were to reverse her floor exercise score to her initial mark, according to a statement released by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) on Sunday.
Chiles has to return her bronze medal, as decided earlier on Sunday by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). However, the USOPC maintains that Chiles "rightfully earned the bronze medal" and that the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the CAS made mistakes.
We were consequently not given adequate representation or the chance to make a thorough presentation of our case. In light of these facts, we are dedicated to following up on an appeal to assist Jordan Chiles in getting the credit she merits. We are committed to helping her succeed as an Olympian, and we'll keep working hard to find a quick and equitable solution to this problem."
Since the CAS is typically the last arbiter in cases involving international sports, the United States has the authority to overturn the ruling. According to the CAS on Saturday, Barbosu should now be in bronze medal position, Chiles should be in fifth place, and Romanian Sabrina Maneca-Voinea should be in fourth place. FIG was given the authority by the court to determine the recipient of the medal.
Three men, all of Cuban descent, competed in the men's triple jump. As a Spanish representative, Jordan Diaz won the gold medal with a jump of 17.86 meters. After competing on behalf of Cuba, Diaz left the Cuban delegation in June 2021, missing the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. In 2022, he became a citizen of Spain and soon after broke the record. In June 2024, World Athletics declared him qualified to compete for Spain.
This week marked the Olympic debut of breaking, as Canadian Philip Kim won the gold in the men's event and Japanese athlete Ami Yuasa won the gold in the women's competition. Following a round-robin phase that saw 16 breakers of each gender, eight advanced to the knockout stage (1 vs 1). There were five categories for scoring: musicality, originality, execution, vocabulary, and technique. Despite its inception, the sport won't be present at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
