The motorcyclist who died in the early hours of the morning after a multi-vehicle collision on the M4 highway in western Sydney has been identified as Benjamin Coyne, a St. Kevin's College alumnus.
The motorcycle, which was thought to be a small scooter, was traveling east on the motorway when the incident happened, just before two in the morning, close to Church Street in Parramatta. The motorcyclist struck a white Kia vehicle that had merged from lane two into lane one, according to preliminary accounts from NSW Police. The rider was thrown onto the road by the collision, where he was unfortunately hit by a number of other cars, including a marked NSW Police car, a Toyota Echo, and a ute.
Emergency personnel quickly arrived, and after administering CPR on the spot, police and paramedics took Ben to the hospital. They tried, but were unable to bring him back to life. He was in his twenties.
Both his local community and the larger network of St. Kevin's College graduates have been shocked by Ben Coyne's unexpected passing. Teachers and classmates at the college recall him as a driven and caring young man with a bright future.
Because a police vehicle was involved in the deadly incident, a critical incident investigation is currently under progress, which is being supervised by the Professiona Standards Command of the NSW Police Force.
Initial investigations indicate that the cyclist was riding at a reasonably low speed—well below the 90 km/h limit at that portion of the freeway, according to NSW Police Commissioner Brett McFadden. Neither lights nor sirens were on in the marked police vehicle at the time of the event, nor was it involved in a pursuit. Police verified in a statement that "there had been no interaction with the rider."
McFadden stated, "This is a tragic set of circumstances for all involved." "The officers, the other drivers, and the family are all in great anguish. Everyone is trembling.
As the inquiry continues, three drivers—including a senior constable from NSW Police—will likely be interviewed after being admitted to the hospital for **mandatory testing**.
For hours after the collision, local traffic was severely affected. Despite the reopening of two eastbound lanes of the M4, local routes continue to encounter delays, including the
