Camden Skyler Childers, a 21-year-old Stanley, North Carolina native, has been officially recognized by authorities as the motorcyclist who was shot and killed by a Newton police officer on June 26, 2025, after a fast-paced pursuit.
The incident started just before midnight when Newton Police attempted a traffic stop along U.S. Highway 70, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) confirmed that Childers was the person slain. After Childers, riding a motorbike, refused to stop and led police on a pursuit that ended in Conover, the altercation became more heated.
Investigators said that following a brief altercation between Childers' motorcycle and a patrol car, Newton Police Lieutenant Carlos Alverto Uribe pulled the trigger, killing Childers. Shortly after reaching Catawba Valley Medical Center, Childers was declared dead despite the quick actions of first responders to provide assistance.
Following an SBI investigation into the officer-involved incident, Lt. Uribe, 28, was subsequently taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder. The Catawba County District Attorney's Office is still investigating the case, and more information might be made public as the case develops.
Calls for openness and community sorrow have been sparked by Childers' passing. He was a lively and enthusiastic young guy whose life ended way too soon, according to his family and friends. The public awaits the release of body camera footage and more evidence, and investigators have scheduled an autopsy.
Authorities are still urging anyone with knowledge on the event to get in touch with the Newton Police Department or SBI.
