Dr. Matt Garrett, a respected human capital specialist and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, passed away unexpectedly, leaving his family in mourning. Matt Garrett Atlanta, Georgia  Dr. J. Matthew Garrett, Ph.D., PMP, a highly respected leader, strategist, and advocate, passed away unexpectedly and tragically. The Atlanta community and the national human capital strategy industry are in mourning. While traveling overseas with his boyfriend, Matt Bunch, and a close friend, Dr. Garrett passed away following a massive heart attack. A few moments before the unexpected medical emergency occurred, he was joyful and in a good mood. Despite efforts to save him, he passed away in the hospital a few hours later.


 Matt Garrett was a pioneer, not only a consultant. As a Principal at Deloitte Consulting, he focused on using creative, human-centered methods to transform public health and government organizations. Having worked in the federal, state, and local sectors for over 20 years, Garrett was keenly interested in how work was evolving and how it affected people, institutions, and policies. He was regarded by his colleagues and clients as a trustworthy advisor, a mentor in leadership, and a change agent who promoted progress wherever he went.




His degrees from the Terry College of Business and the University of Georgia earned him a Ph.D. and a PMP certification. His work as a Leadership and Organizational Development Specialist at Emory University, where he developed his ability to guide people and organizations through complex changes, was another aspect of his career foundation. accomplishments, Matt Garrett was a pillar of Atlanta's LGBTQ+ community. Garrett has been an active member of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) since 2006, and his commitment to campaigning and equality has never wavered.



 He was active in the HRC Atlanta community for nearly twenty years, first serving as co-chair of the annual auction, then co-chairing the gala, and finally serving as co-chair of the Board of Governors (BOG) for Atlanta. He was acknowledged for his generosity, leadership, and unwavering work behind the scenes, and he was a driving force behind HRC Atlanta's most important events.



His partner Matt Bunch described the tragic final moments in a moving remembrance:

"He was joking with Luiz and me during a late Saturday morning breakfast at our hotel overseas—reminiscing about our voyage and our excitement for traveling to the Maldives later that night." After spending several hours in the hospital, Matt passed away shortly after suffering a fatal heart attack. I am still in complete shock: I was not ready for this sudden setback. The loss of Dr. Garrett leaves an incalculable void in the lives of the innumerable people he mentored, supported, and loved as well as in his field of expertise, where he questioned norms about how people and organizations may thrive. His influence lives on in the leaders he trained, the clients he transformed, and the community he passionately served.




In the next days, the family will provide information regarding the funeral and memorial plans.



Dr. Matt Garrett was a friend, supporter, strategist, and mentor. He left behind a legacy of inspiration and impact, lived with purpose, and led with compassion.
