Cardozo, Michael, New York, NY Death Cause and Obituary: We lament the passing of a great man who devoted his life to creating a city that is safer, better, and more equitable for everybody. His contributions, which are based on honesty, zeal, and a strong dedication to public service, have had a long-lasting impact on New York City.
He was instrumental in all of our administration's significant legislative, policy, and legal initiatives. His fingerprints were on every advancement we made from the beginning. He played a major role in developing the city's plan to combat the menace of illegal firearms that endangered our neighborhoods. He never wavered in his resolve to make our neighborhoods and streets safer for all New Yorkers, but especially for our most vulnerable.
With courage and determination, he challenged the tobacco business and promoted public health policies that would save future generations. His efforts to reduce air pollution were not only about cleaner skies; they were also about healthier kids, fewer asthma episodes, and a community that cared about its citizens' health.
He devoted his life to enhancing public education because he believed that all children should have an equal opportunity to succeed. He battled to make educational parity a reality rather than simply a goal and worked to improve our public schools. In order to provide more families with stability and dignity in their home, he also played a significant part in the construction and maintenance of affordable housing.
His influence extended beyond social justice to the physical and economic growth of the city. He contributed to the advancement of important development initiatives that gave long-underserved communities new opportunities, jobs, and life. And throughout it all, he remained steadfast in his conviction that the government ought to be moral, open, and responsible. By holding public service to the highest standards of integrity, he sought to strengthen government ethics.
His service extended beyond his tenure in government. He continued to support projects that promoted justice, equity, and advancement in the private sector, using his leadership and talents to give back to the city he loved. His decades-long commitment to the public good had an impact on almost every facet of civic life.
For many years to come, New York City will be impacted by his legacy. Long after he was with us, the principles he promoted, the individuals he touched, and the policies he helped create have left a lasting legacy. More significantly, he was a silent force of conviction and an inspiration to the upcoming generation of leaders, public servants, and attorneys. His life's work serves as a reminder to all of us that, when applied with compassion and purpose, the law can be a very effective tool for good.
We send our sincerest sympathies to his friends, family, and coworkers. I pray that his memory will be a gift and that his example will continue to motivate people who want to use service to improve the world.
