Following a fatal shooting in the Drummeer Road neighborhood of Maguiresbridge on Wednesday morning that left two people dead and two more critically injured, a rural Northern Ireland community is in shock.
Lan Rutledge, a well-known sales specialist and proprietor of Rutledge Contracts, an agricultural contracting company located close to Lisburn, County Antrim, has been identified by police as the suspect in what they believe to be a domestic shooting.
Rutledge allegedly shot members of his own family before turning the gun on himself, according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). At the scene, he and one of his children were declared dead. Two more people, who were also relatives, were taken to the hospital after suffering severe injuries.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said that it sent out several emergency units, including an air ambulance, in response to a 999 call at 8:21 a.m. One of the wounded was transported by air to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital, and the other was driven to South West Acute Hospital.
In its first statement, PSNI stated that "there is no ongoing risk to the public." "A thorough investigation is in progress, and more information will be provided when it is ready."
The tranquil village of Maguiresbridge, which former First Minister Arlene Foster referred to as a "very sleepy little village," has been rocked by the tragedy. Foster expressed her sympathies to everyone impacted by the tragedy, calling it "simply absolutely awful" while speaking from London.
She expressed her sympathy for all those affected by what appears to be a very terrible event. "In the days ahead, those engaged will require a great deal of support, and I have no doubt that the Fermanagh community will supply it."
Foster added that she knows members of the incident's larger family firsthand.
Pat Cullen, the Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, also sent his sympathy. He asked the public not to make assumptions while police investigations are ongoing, saying, "First and foremost, my thoughts are with the victims and their families at this tragic time."
For several hours, Drummeer Road was closed off to traffic, and the area around the scene was cordoned off.
The local community is in shock over the death of Lan Rutledge, a well-known figure in agricultural contracting circles, and the terrible toll it took on his family. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still being looked into by authorities.
