The woman who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run on Interstate 40 early Tuesday morning has been identified by the Metro Nashville Police Department as Nashville resident Melena Sanderson, 42.
The tragic event happened just after 12:30 a.m. on I-40 West close to Old Hickory Boulevard. Sanderson was getting out of a gray SUV that had stopped on the interstate's right shoulder. She entered the lanes of traffic for reasons that are still being looked into, and many passing cars hit her.
The burgundy sedan that struck her first ran away from the scene of the accident. After that, more cars hit Sanderson, but only one driver—who was driving a Fiat—stayed to talk to police and provide information.
According to authorities, the driver of the gray SUV from which Sanderson had gotten out also fled the scene without providing any help, adding to the tragedy. Detectives are now making a concerted effort to identify and track down the gray SUV and the burgundy sedan, as well as any other drivers who might have been involved but left the scene.
According to investigators, the burgundy vehicle may be undergoing repairs or modifications at the moment due to probable serious damage to the front end, windshield, and possibly roof. Authorities are warning the public and owners of body shops to keep an eye out for cars that fit that description.
Concern over the rising incidence of deadly pedestrian collisions and hit-and-run incidents, especially on nighttime high-speed roads, has been rekindled by this occurrence. Police emphasized that all drivers have a moral and legal duty to stop and provide assistance following an accident, stressing that escaping the scene only serves to exacerbate the trauma and the possible repercussions.
Details regarding what caused Sanderson to exit the car and whether she was by herself have not yet been made public by officials. Furthermore, it is still unknown whether she walked into traffic as a result of a breakdown, argument, or other circumstance.
The community laments Sanderson's unexpected and terrible passing, but her loved ones have not yet made a public remark. While detectives continue to look for justice and clarity, friends and family are left with unanswered questions.
