A shooting broke out early on Sunday morning close to the Power & Light District, Kansas City's downtown entertainment center, leaving two people dead and three others injured.
The T-Mobile Center was only two streets away from the scene of the August 24 incident, which occurred at roughly 3:30 a.m. near E. 13th Street and Grand Boulevard.
According to Kansas City police, a dispute started in a parking lot before several rounds were fired. Five victims were discovered when police and fire personnel arrived.
At the site, one man was declared deceased. Around 6:40 a.m., another patient who had been in serious condition passed away at the hospital. Their identities and ages have not been disclosed by the police.
Three more people were admitted to the hospital: a woman with non-life-threatening injuries, a guy with severe injuries, and a young kid who is still in critical condition.
Sergeant Phil DiMartino of the Kansas City Police Department denounced the violence, stating:
"If there is anything worth taking out a gun and shooting someone, I do not know anything about it. Nothing is worth someone losing their life over, regardless of the nature of the dispute or debate.
In his remarks, Mayor Quinton Lucas also mentioned his planned surface lot legislation, which would impose additional rules on parking lots in busy nightlife districts including Power & Light, Westport, 18th and Vine, and the Country Club Plaza—areas that have witnessed a number of violent incidents.
Detectives are still interviewing witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage as part of the continuing investigation. Anyone with information is urged by the police to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
