Following a confrontation with an armed, suicidal person inside an apartment on the 1200 block of East Wilson Street on Saturday night, Batavia is experiencing a significant police and fire response.
Officers responded to allegations of a person with a pistol inside the flat, perhaps holding children, according to police radio chatter. Shortly after police arrived, shots were fired, and at least one hostage has since been freed.
A second fire engine and several ambulances have been called to the location. Although the number of victims and their current situations are unknown, authorities verified that multiple persons had been shot. Police action in the 1200 block of E. Wilson Street, Batavia, Illinois. Until the problem is settled, residents are advised to stay away from the area.
Many emergency vehicles, including a truck from the Kane County Sheriff's command center, were seen racing to the scene, according to witnesses. At the site, Aurora police are also supporting Batavia police and fire departments.
While EMS and fire personnel are preparing in the area, SWAT officers are still negotiating with the suspect.
Because the situation is still active and dangerous, police have asked the public to stay away from East Wilson Street near the incident.
