BCSO: Walton Deputies Shot While Pursuing Warrant; Suspect Found Dead; Continue Reading
Two Boone County Sheriff's deputies were shot while executing a felony warrant in Walton late Thursday night, setting off a tense and deadly scenario.
Just after 10 p.m., deputies were trying to serve a warrant for past-due child support to a male residing at an apartment on Towne Creek Drive when they were confronted with "heavy gunfire," according to the Boone County Sheriff's Office.
Both deputies sustained multiple injuries. One was carried to UC Medical Center by air ambulance, and the other was taken by ground ambulance. Both deputies are in stable condition, with one needing surgery, according to BCSO Major Philip Ridgell. Although Ridgell later stated that their prognoses are "very favorable," he nevertheless described the situation as a "worst nightmare."
The suspect holed himself inside the apartment after the gunfight. Several agencies, including SWAT units, tried to negotiate before deploying gas canisters. A drone was deployed inside after no one responded, and the suspect was found unconscious in a bedroom on the second floor. Authorities concluded that he appeared to have shot himself to death.
No additional residents or deputies were hurt. Since the investigation is still underway, the suspect's identity has not been made public.
