George Thole, Minnesota's Stillwater Death Cause and Obituary: Coach George Thole, a true legend in the Stillwater town and the larger world of high school athletics, passed away this week. Coach Thole's death leaves a profound hole in the hearts of everyone who knew him, played for him, or was influenced by his leadership. His career spanned decades and had an enduring impression on Minnesota football.
With 13 Conference Championships, four Minnesota State Football Championships, and an incredible.803 winning % while he was coach at Stillwater High School, Coach Thole's coaching achievements are legendary. However, the statistics only provide a portion of the picture.
His real legacy is found in the thousands of young men he inspired, guided, and prepared for life off the field, not in the awards, records, or trophies. He was a father figure to many, a disciplinarian, and a character builder. Former players frequently talk about how Coach Thole's impact went well beyond Friday evenings, teaching them tenacity, accountability, and collaboration that remained with them long after they graduated.
Along with being a family man, he raised a solid and devoted family that mirrored the principles he taught his teammates. Among them is my close buddy Eric Thole, who proudly carries on his father's courage and enthusiasm. Their relationship was evidence of the kind of man Coach Thole was: incredibly devoted, moral, and modest.
I was a transplant from Michigan who came to Stillwater, so I was able to personally witness Coach Thole's generosity. From the first day, he welcomed me with open arms and gave me free stuff. He also treated me like a member of the community. That small act of kindness said a lot about the kind of guy he was: kind, sincere, and subtly giving.
Coach George Thole was a titan in every life he touched, not just on the field. He was a man among men. For the generations of athletes, students, and families who had the good fortune to know him, his influence will endure.
Peace be with you, Coach Thole. I appreciate the victories, the insight, and the unflinching example you have provided.
We shall always remember you.
