Vale John Baker SLSA, Obituary, Cause of Death: The unexpected and extremely tragic death of Surf Life Saving Australia President John Baker AM ESM has left the Surf Life Saving community in a state of deep sorrow.
John, who is affectionately referred to as "JB," was the seventh president of the national organization since its establishment in 1907. After serving on the national board for an incredible 14 years, he assumed the presidency in 2021. The cause and the innumerable lives it touches have been forever changed by his vision, leadership, and steadfast dedication.
John was an enthusiastic supporter of surf lifesaving at all levels and was more than just a title or a position. His influence extended from the boardroom to the beach. His unwavering commitment meant that lifesaving remained a national treasure as well as an essential community service, helping to shape Surf Life Saving Australia's course. Adam Weir, CEO of Surf Life Saving Australia, honoured John's legacy by saying:
Our Surf Life Saving community is grieving today because we lost one of our most devoted volunteers and outstanding leaders.
John's leadership was characterized by a sincere concern for people, including club members, volunteers, and the general public. He promoted creativity, diversity, and the value of empowering the upcoming generation of lifesavers. His enthusiasm, moral character, and strong faith in the life-saving mission struck a chord with people all throughout the nation.
In addition to the larger lifesaving community, the Williamstown Swimming & Life Saving Club sends its deepest sympathies to John's family, friends, and the Brighton SLSC community, where he was a beloved and highly respected member.
John Baker left behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and service. He will be regarded as a friend, mentor, and guiding influence. His influence will continue to shape Australia's surf lifesaving culture and destiny for many generations to come, even though his presence will be much missed.
JB, may you rest in peace. Your life strengthened our community and made our beaches safer.
