Greg Iles, the renowned best-selling novelist, died on August 15, 2025, at the age of 65. The literary community and the close-knit town of Natchez, Mississippi, are in sorrow.
After a protracted and valiant fight, Iles passed away from multiple myeloma, a blood cancer he had been treating since 1996. Iles was born in 1960 in Stuttgart, West Germany, and grew up in Natchez, the location of several of his well-known books.
He first explored music after graduating from the University of Mississippi in 1983, playing as a vocalist and guitarist. However, he eventually moved to composing, beginning with his 1993 debut, Spandau Phoenix, which brought him widespread praise.
Iles crafted compelling political thrillers, historical mysteries, and compelling stories with a strong Southern cultural foundation in his 17 best-selling books and novella.
The Natchez Burning Trilogy—Natchez Burning, The Bone Tree, and Mississippi Blood—set against the backdrop of racial and societal tensions are among his most well-known works.
After delaying a stem cell transplant to finish the manuscript, he published his last book, Southern Man (2024), which served as a tribute to his skill and commitment.

Alongside writers Stephen King, Dave Barry, and Amy Tan, Iles was well-known for his involvement in the literary-musical group Rock Bottom Remainders, which combined his love of performance and storytelling. (The Real Book Spy by Ryan Steck and Wikipedia)

Southern Man is "a genuinely terrible book because of its reality," according to Stephen King, who also commended the book's political implications. (The Real Book Spy by Ryan Steck)
Greg Iles is survived by his four children and his cherished wife, Caroline. His life serves as a reminder of the timeless importance of storytelling, perseverance in the face of hardship, and steadfast adherence to one's principles and heritage.
