On Thursday morning, August 14, 2025, Jeremy Solomon, a 44-year-old citizen of Irvington, New York, was struck and murdered while riding his bicycle. The town is in sorrow for his untimely and tragic loss. The collision happened at around 7:47 a.m. on Yorktown's Route 134, which is frequently used by both bicycles and commuters.
According to the Yorktown Police Department, initial inquiries showed that Solomon was hit by a car operated by a 21-year-old driver when he was riding his bicycle.
Yorktown Police, New Castle Police, Empress EMS, the Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Yorktown Fire Department, and the Millwood Fire Department were among the emergency responders who were sent to the scene right away. Solomon was pronounced dead at the site despite their quick reaction, leaving friends, family, and community members inconsolable.
Conditions of the Mishap
According to authorities, the driver of the vehicle appeared to have had the right-of-way at the time of the collision based on video surveillance and evidence analyzed from the area. After undergoing a precautionary medical evaluation at Northern Westchester Hospital, the driver—whose identity has not been made public—was released. No charges have been made as of yet.
Both the Westchester County Department of Public Safety Accident Investigation Unit and the Yorktown Police Department Accident Investigation Unit are still looking into the situation. Authorities stressed that a thorough examination of the road conditions, driver conduct, and Solomon's movements in the seconds preceding the collision will all be part of the investigation.
Impact on the Community and Mourning
Jeremy Solomon's unexpected death has rocked Irvington and the neighboring areas with grief. He was recalled by friends and neighbors as a lively, pleasant person who loved to ride a bike and lead an active lifestyle. He frequently spoke about the freedom and tranquility that riding a bicycle offered him, and many people observed that he was regularly spotted riding his bike around town.
One resident of Irvington remarked, "Jeremy was one of those persons who always had a smile on his face and a good word to impart." It is devastating to lose him in this manner. It is really difficult to accept that he is no longer with us because he liked being outside.
Family members thanked friends, neighbors, and the larger community for their overwhelming support, but they asked for privacy during this time.
Issues with Road Safety
Concerns regarding Westchester County cyclists' safety on the roads have also been rekindled by the incident. Despite its beauty, Route 134 is notoriously congested during rush hour and is not usually thought to be the safest route for bicycles because of its narrow shoulders and fast traffic. In order to help prevent tragedies like this one, proponents of cycling have long asked for improved infrastructure, such as bike lanes and more signage.
Although drivers and bikers share responsibility for safety, local officials acknowledged these worries and stated that more community discussion is required to make roads safer for all users.
Continued Research
Investigators have not yet concluded the case, despite the fact that the driver has not been charged with any crimes. Anyone with pertinent information or who may have seen the incident is being urged by authorities to come forward and help with the continuing investigation.
Before deciding if more action is necessary, the Yorktown Police Department's Accident Investigation Unit will continue to examine all available information in coordination with Westchester County authorities.
Recalling Jeremy Solomon
Jeremy Solomon's life was sadly cut short, but his warmth, kindness, and love of life's small pleasures will live on in our memories. To commemorate his memory, friends and family have started planning unofficial monuments; some have even proposed holding a public bike ride in his honor.
