We express our deep sorrow at the loss of Joan Leishman, a cherished friend, guiding figure, and strong supporter of writers who had to leave their homes. Her absence creates a significant gap in the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her, as well as within the wider literary and human rights circles where she devoted countless hours, energy, and knowledge.
Joan dedicated 30 years to journalism at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), earning a reputation as an exceptional reporter. She maintained the highest journalism standards, demonstrating integrity and deep understanding. After retiring two years ago, she shifted her focus to advocacy, becoming a valuable volunteer with PEN Canada, where she played a key role in supporting refugee and exiled writers through mentorship, guidance, and, most importantly, compassion. To those who had the privilege of collaborating with her,
Joan was not just a coworker; she was a reliable friend, an unwavering ally, and a source of hope during hard times. She generously offered her time, whether it involved organizing events, assessing proposals, or simply providing support to writers faced with significant challenges.
Just two weeks ago, she was actively involved, sharing insights, guiding new advocacy directions, and enthusiastically planning future steps with clear vision. In her own words:“Next week, we will talk about proposals and discussion points with PEN Canada.”Her untimely departure has left her friends and colleagues in disbelief. She was a source of strength and stability, and her absence will resonate for years ahead.
In 2023, Joan received the Marie-Ange Garrigue Award from PEN Canada, a recognition that truly suited her. This award honors Canadians who have played a vital role in aiding writers and journalists in danger, assisting them in escaping violence, harassment, or wrongful imprisonment. Joan demonstrated this commitment with both grace and humility, never asking for acknowledgment for her relentless efforts. Her impact will continue through the writers she safeguarded, the communities she helped create, and the voices she uplifted.
Joan viewed freedom of expression not merely as a principle but as a moral duty—a responsibility to advocate for those whose stories needed to be told.Joan Leishman will forever be remembered in our hearts—as a mentor, a friend, a passionate advocate, and a gentle force for good. Her commitment, kindness, and belief in the influence of words transformed lives. May we cherish her memory and continue her mission with the same compassion and dedication she exemplified.
Rest in power, Joan. We are grateful for everything you did.
