He was a quiet-intense filmmaker who was brilliant, intuitive, focused, and totally comfortable in front of the camera. Even for a brief moment, it was evident from watching him work that he was doing more than simply taking pictures; he was carefully and precisely building meaning and conveying stories.

Matthias was one of those people who could talk without saying much. He let his art to speak for him, and it did so in a powerful way. He was composed yet determined when he was on site. He listened to what others had overlooked. He possessed that elusive quality that great artists possess: the capacity to temporarily stop the world and change its perspective.

It is devastating to learn about his passing. It serves as a sobering reminder of how short and brittle life can be, and how crucial it is to express your love and gratitude to the people in your life.
