Williams, a well-liked and esteemed anesthesiologist. Dr. Williams, who was TSA President from 2022 to 2023 and most recently served as the ASA Director, leaves a legacy characterized by academic excellence, leadership, mentoring, and an uncompromising commitment to patient care.


For those who knew him, Dr. Williams was more than just a leader; he was an inspiration. He served as Vice-Chair and Professor of Anesthesiology at the UT McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, where he works as a critical care anesthesiologist. His contributions went well beyond the intensive care unit and operation room. He was a well-respected teacher who received national recognition for his efforts to instruct and guide upcoming anesthesiologists. In recognition of his commitment to teaching quality and lifelong learning, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) presented him with the "Distinguished Educator in Anesthesiology Award."


Throughout his career, Dr. Williams promoted patient safety and the scientific growth of anesthesiology by fusing clinical knowledge with scholarly understanding. In every leadership position he had, especially as TSA President, his enthusiasm, vision, and dedication were evident. Under his direction, the association saw a resurgence of interest in community and professional growth among anesthesiologists in Texas and elsewhere.

In addition, Dr. Williams served as a mentor to many, offering advice to those stepping into the challenging fields of critical care and anesthesiology. He was a considerate and empowering mentor. Many TSA employees who were his mentees or students have become leaders themselves, seeing his guidance and example as essential to their career advancement.


In addition to his many achievements, Dr. Williams is known for his integrity, generosity, and commitment to people. Colleagues remember his friendliness in casual times with trainees and peers, his thoughtful presence in tense clinical settings, and his clarity of thought facing administrative challenges. His passing has a profound impact on the medical community as well as the countless lives he generously and compassionately touched.


The anesthesiology community has suffered a great loss with the death of Dr. George W. Williams. Through the students he taught, the colleagues he motivated, and the patients he skillfully and honorably served, his contributions will live on.
