 Smith, Mary J., Auburn, AL Death Cause and Obituary: At the age of 93, Mary J. Smith, a cherished Auburn, Alabama resident, died quietly on August 23, 2025. On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at 2:00 pm, Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Road, Columbus, Georgia, will have a graveside service to commemorate her life. Rev. Mike Reeves will officiate the service.


Mary was born in Ft. Benning, Georgia, on April 10, 1932. Her parents were Helen Marie Joiner and the late Thomas Catlin Joiner. Mary pursued a prosperous career in the federal service after graduating from high school, first in Ft. Benning, Georgia, and then at the Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Throughout her career, many people respected her commitment and work ethic.


Mary was a devout Christian whose life was profoundly impacted by her beliefs. She held a variety of positions in her church, such as senior citizen group leader and director of the children's church. Everyone who knew her was inspired by her dedication to her community and her faith.

Mary, who was well-known for her quick wit and contagious laughter, was a fun person who enjoyed making jokes. She frequently said that her favorite child was her youngest son, David. She loved her grandchildren dearly, and she especially loved "our tiny girl," her great-great-granddaughter Skyler.


Everyone who had the honor of knowing Mary will miss her warmth, humor, and devotion. She leaves a legacy of family, faith, and love that will never stop inspiring.


Her cherished husband, Hardy J. Smith, her parents, Thomas Catlin Joiner and Helen Marie Joiner, her siblings, and her sons-in-law, Dennis LeBrasseur, Kirby Johnson, and Lonnie Garrison, all passed away before Mary J. Smith.

In order to honor Mary's extraordinary life and preserve her memory, the family extends an invitation to everyone who knew her.
