Obituary and Death News for Maria Nunney: Cleveland Teachers Donald and Maria Nunney Died Tragically in a Firefight in North Carolina.

Maria Nunney, 50, and her husband, Donald Nunney, 55, both career educators in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), passed away in a terrible crash while vacationing with their children in North Carolina. Their deaths have left the Cleveland education community in deep sorrow.

The collision happened on Friday at 1:18 p.m. close to Chapel Hill, at the junction of Interstate 40 east and Interstate 85 north. The Nunneys were traveling as a family to drop off their oldest son, who was starting his first year in college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

State troopers said that the family vehicle swerved off the highway into a forested area, collided with a tree, and then caught fire. Donald, the driver, was taken to UNC Chapel Hill in critical condition, while Maria, a passenger, passed away at the site. Unfortunately, he later passed away from his wounds. Despite surviving, their two youngest children, ages 9 and 14, are still in the hospital at Duke Hospital due to severe injuries.

Emergency personnel raced to the scene after witnesses claimed to have seen the van abruptly pull off the road. As first responders worked, the couple's oldest son, who was in a different car, saw the collision and instantly pulled over to be with his family.

The Cleveland school community has been crushed by the death. The couple is "great teachers, caring and devoted parents, and genuinely committed to their kids and community," according to Shari Obrenski, president of the Cleveland Teachers Union. CMSD said that when classrooms start up again on Monday, grief counselors will be on hand.

The school community as a whole recalls Maria and Donald Nunney as teachers who inspired, encouraged, and genuinely cared for everyone around them, in addition to the bereaved children and family.
