Authorities have revealed the identification of the person who allegedly fired a firearm at cops and was killed by return fire, while the investigation into a police shooting in Yakima continues.
Officers responded to a complaint of shooting around 12th Street and Washington Avenue on the afternoon of August 9, according to the Yakima Police Department. When police arrived, they found that a 33-year-old lady had been shot and murdered and that a 13-year-old kid had been hurt and sent to a local hospital. When an automobile thought to be connected to the murder was found later that night, several cops used their cars to immobilize it near the intersection of Third Street and east Walnut Avenue.
The suspect in the stalled car, subsequently identified as 36-year-old Roberto Leyva Sanchez, reportedly pointed a revolver at the cops and opened fire, according to the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit. Sanchez was killed after several officers retaliated with gunfire.
No cops were hit by rounds fired from Sanchez's gun, according to the YVSIU. Nevertheless, one officer was shot and sent to the hospital. The cop was released later that day after investigators determined that his injuries were not life-threatening.
According to the YPD, an inquiry is being carried out to see whether the officers' actions were in accordance with the agency's policies and procedures. The YVSIU is conducting an investigation into the shooting itself, which is separate from this one.
