Prosecutors presented shocking new information in court on Friday regarding a brutal house invasion that killed a 16-year-old girl and gravely injured her mother, leaving a west suburban community in shock.
Before being shot by a Cook County Sheriff's deputy, the defendant, Juan Carlos Perez-Abarca, 35, of Orland Park, is suspected of strangling the adolescent victim, stabbing her mother, and holding her at knifepoint.
The Assault
An apartment on the 6400 block of Joliet Road, close to the La Grange and Countryside boundary, was the scene of the incident on Monday night. Prosecutors claim that while his ex-girlfriend, the 48-year-old mother, was abroad trying to obtain an emergency order of protection against him, Perez-Abarca used a ladder to enter the second-floor apartment.
Tragically, earlier that day, that plea was turned down. According to reports, Perez-Abarca broke into the house and hid in a closet while he waited for the victims to get home.
Perez-Abarca attacked the woman when she and her teenage daughter, Emily Romo, arrived home. Before turning his knife on Emily's mother, the prosecution claimed he suffocated Emily by placing a plastic bag over her head.
Deputies responded to a domestic violence report at 5:30 p.m. and discovered the suspect repeatedly stabbing the mother while pinning her to the ground. Emily was already lying close by, still.
Police Reaction
Before Perez-Abarca stabbed the victim once more in front of the cops, the responding deputy delivered several orders, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office. A deputy then started shooting, hitting the guy in the leg. The suspect, the mother, and the daughter were all taken to nearby hospitals.
Emily passed away on Thursday night, four days after the vicious attack, from her wounds. Although she is in critical condition, her mother is expected to live.
Remembering the Victims
The mother-daughter team was characterized by neighbors as compassionate and incredibly involved in their neighborhood. A close friend, Shamonda Hall, expressed her grief over the loss, saying, "She was more than just a neighbor, she was my sister." She referred to me as "sis." Emily was a child, naive. It is incredibly cruel to kill her because she was angry with her mother.
Suspicions that the attack had been premeditated were raised when a neighbor recounted seeing Perez-Abarca prowling outside the building days before to the incident.
Domestic Conflict in History
Prosecutors disclosed in court that Perez-Abarca and the victim's mother had a history of a failed relationship. He allegedly pursued her in the days before the incident, showing up at her house and place of employment without permission.
Authorities think she was exposed to his increasing violence because the emergency protective order was denied. Prosecutors said that Perez-Abarca laid the stage for the fatal ambush by entering the flat before the victims returned on the day of the incident.
Court Proceedings Perez-Abarca showed up in court on Friday in a wheelchair after being released from the hospital on Thursday night. Prosecutors have stated that after Emily's death, the attempted murder and home invasion charges against him would be elevated to murder.
A Bridgeview judge described the case as "nothing short of a horrible act of violence" and ordered him to be kept without bond at the Cook County Jail. The next court date for Perez-Abarca is set on September 5.
Investigations Are In Progress
Body camera footage from the event, which captured the tumultuous altercation, was made public by the Cook County Sheriff's Office. As the bleeding woman cries out for assistance, deputies see Perez-Abarca holding her at knifepoint in the footage. Deputies open fire as the attack intensifies a few seconds later.
Recognizing the video's alarming material, ABC7 Chicago froze and obscured the most explicit parts. The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is looking into the officer-involved shooting, while the Sheriff's Police Detective Division is still looking into the criminal case.
A Community in Sorrow
The community of La Grange Highlands has been crushed by Emily Romo's passing. She was characterized by classmates and friends as a bright, kind teen with a bright future. Already, neighbors are coming together to help her bereaved mother, and vigils are being organized in her honor.
Since many people think that better protections could have avoided this tragedy, the case has also rekindled discussions on the critical need for comprehensive domestic violence protections and intervention.
