Tom Lehrer's Cause of Death and Obituary

Tom Lehrer, Cause of Death, Obituary: At the age of 97, Tom Lehrer, the legendary mathematician, musician, and satirist whose piercing wit gave us hits like "The Vatican Rag" and "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park," has yesterday.

We at UC Santa Cruz remember Lehrer more as a brilliant educator, a kind colleague, and a teacher who brought the same enthusiasm for wit and wonder to the classroom as he did to the stage. The world will remember Lehrer for his brilliant and biting musical comedy—songs that parodied politics, religion, and social norms with unparalleled cleverness.

Lehrer would teach at UC Santa Cruz for almost thirty years after joining the faculty in the early 1970s. Although mathematics and its applications in the social sciences were the main emphasis of his academic work, his interests and classes were far from traditional. His classes frequently blurred the boundaries between disciplines, including anything from logic and probability to voting system mathematics and even musical theater. His renowned lectures were replete with wisdom, humor, and the occasional spontaneous song.

Lehrer's cult-favorite albums and image as a musical renegade attracted many students to his seminars, but they soon found Lehrer the educator to be just as interesting as Lehrer the performer. Intellectual curiosity, better questioning, and making learning fun were all very important to him. Tom Lehrer demonstrated to generations of students that creativity and rigor could—and should—coexist in a society that is all too ready to divide the arts from the sciences.

Outside of the spotlight, Lehrer was very quiet, humble about his celebrity, and more interested in ideas than praise. He frequently said that his musical career was a "distraction" from his true passions, which were mathematics and teaching. However, that very duality—his capacity to both make fun of the world's absurdities and aid others in better understanding it—was what made him such a special and beloved figure on our campus.

Lehrer's legacy endured even after he retired. New generations kept discovering his tunes, alumni recalled his instruction with fondness, and anybody fortunate enough to have met him felt his effect.

We at UC Santa Cruz are incredibly honored that Tom Lehrer decided to live here for so long. His loss is felt not only in the fields of mathematics and satire, but also in the hearts of students, coworkers, and fans who were taught by him in the classroom, on stage, and on vinyl.

I appreciate the education, the laughs, and
