Tragic Death: After a Stage 4 Cancer Battle, Katie Slaton, Star of 1000-Lb. Sisters, Dies at 37, Leaving Cousin Amanda Halterman Grieving
After battling cancer, Katie Slaton, the cousin of 1000-Lb. Sisters stars Tammy and Amy, died at the age of 37.
According to The U.S. Sun, Katie Slaton, cousin of Tammy and Amy Slaton of 1000-Lb. Sisters, passed away at the age of 37 following a valiant fight with stage 4 cancer. Amanda Halterman, the sister of Tammy and Amy, shared the news on Tuesday morning. She wrote an emotional Instagram tribute, stating that she was making the announcement "with a completely shattered heart and spirit."
"My little cousin went to rest at the foot of Jesus yesterday," Amanda wrote with a picture of herself cuddling Katie's cousin's infant. "A force to be reckoned with, someone who gave love openly and unreservedly," she said of Katie. In addition to being my best friend, she was the life of the party and brightened any space she entered.
Although both Tammy, 39, and Amy, 37, expressed their support during Katie's cancer fight, they have not yet made any public remarks over their cousin's death. Natalie Gerrick Bailie, Katie's longterm lover, is her surviving spouse. The Slaton family is originally from Kentucky, where the pair resided together.
According to a GoFundMe campaign created by a friend, Katie was given a stage 4 cancer diagnosis early this year. In January, she started chemotherapy, which at first seemed to be working well. Natalie posted on Facebook on February 19, saying, "We are very glad that her symptoms have started to improve. Throughout this entire experience, both of our families have been amazing. Without you, we would not have progressed this far. We appreciate everyone's prayers and help! #Katiestrong.”
Unfortunately, in recent weeks, Katie's health started to deteriorate. Amanda asked for continuous prayers in an update she shared on August 25: "Please lift up a prayer for our family as we stand with Katie Slaton." I am so appreciative of your support during this battle.
Family Heartbreak
Only a year had passed since the family grieved another tragedy when Katie passed away. Caleb Willingham, Tammy's spouse, died in July 2023 at the age of 40 from complications brought on by extreme obesity.
Even though Tammy and Caleb had discreetly split up a few months prior to his passing, Tammy honored him with a heartfelt message that read, "Rest in peace, dear angel." You will always be cherished and missed. I appreciate you showing me genuine love and joy, Caleb.
Katie's positive attitude, her love for her family, and the happiness she brought to everyone around her will live on in her memory.
