Tragic Police-Involved Shooting in Moorhead: Lucas and Nathan Heiberg Continue Reading

The deaths of Lucas Heiberg, 41, of Grand Forks, N.D., and Nathan Heiberg, 42, of Moorhead, who were shot dead by police on Monday night while responding to a suspected domestic violence incident, are being mourned by the community.

Around 9 p.m., according to authorities, Moorhead police were called to the 2400 block of Third Avenue North when a lady reported that she had been abused by both Lucas and Nathan. There were two kids in the apartment. A pistol was discharged from inside the house when cops arrived, and the Heibergs did not answer their phone. Before SWAT entered the unit, officers evacuated surrounding apartments and called for backup. After that, Lucas and Nathan Heiberg were fatally wounded in the ensuing gunfight. Nathan passed very soon after being taken to the hospital, while Lucas was declared dead at the scene.

Sgt. Michael Anderson, Sgt. Kyle Seehusen, and Tyler Seehusen of the Fargo Police SWAT team were helping Moorhead police when the incident occurred. The use of force is being looked at by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). Critical incident leave has been imposed on the police.

There were no other recorded injuries. Parts of the event were recorded by body-worn cameras, and two guns were found inside the residence.

During this tragic moment, the community offers its condolences to the families of Lucas and Nathan Heiberg. In order to fully understand the circumstances behind the unfortunate loss of life, the BCA is still investigating.

This episode serves as a reminder of the difficulties and risks associated in responding to domestic violence.
