Michael Verardo died in Weddington, North Carolina. He was a decorated infantryman of the 82nd Airborne Division and a former U.S. Army Sergeant. Mike was well-known for his bravery, tenacity, and commitment to service; his life served as an example of tenacity and selflessness.
In 2010, while serving in Afghanistan, Mike was seriously wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED). He had to endure years of torturous rehabilitation and more than 120 surgeries as a result of the attack, which left him with unfathomable physical limitations. Mike showed incredible fortitude and an unyielding spirit by refusing to let his disabilities define him in the face of constant suffering.
Mike used his "second opportunity" to help others after he survived his potentially fatal injuries. He took part in adaptive sports contests, remained a strong leader in his church and community in North Carolina, and became a mentor and champion for injured veterans. Numerous lives were impacted by his dedication to serve, even outside of the battlefield.
Michael Verardo left behind a legacy of bravery, empathy, and tenacity. He leaves behind a life that exemplified the best of the American spirit and a community motivated by his example.
