Greg Whitby AM, the former Executive Director of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Parramatta, passed away, and the Catholic community in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains is in grief. After a brief stay in the hospital, Greg died away peacefully on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the age of 73, surrounded by his cherished wife Sue and close family members.

Greg Whitby has over 40 years of experience in Catholic education and has made a name for himself as a fervent supporter of creative and inclusive education. Throughout his career, he held the positions of Executive Director of Catholic Education in the Dioceses of Parramatta and Wollongong, where he promoted an approach to education that put the needs of the students at the center of all choices. Colleagues remember his fearless leadership style, his visionary outlook, and his profound empathy for both children and teachers.
Greg oversaw more than 80 Catholic schools in Parramatta that educated tens of thousands of pupils. He played a key role in advancing contemporary methods of instruction and learning, especially the idea that technology may improve learning and better equip students for a changing world.
