Youngstown, Ohio resident Seth Malkin Death Cause and Obituary: It is with great shock and sadness that the Metropolitan Opera Chorus announces the unexpected death of our cherished friend and colleague, Seth Malkin. Seth, who has been a valued member of the company since 1996, touched everyone who had the privilege of working with him with his warmth, humor, and generosity in addition to his amazing talent on stage.
For almost thirty years, Seth played bass in the Chorus, and his deep, rich voice served as the basis for many memorable performances. Seth had already made a name for himself as a major bassist at Carnegie Hall, the New York City Opera, and on stages all around the world before joining the Met. His talent was both forceful and adaptable; he could perform in a concert, a musical theater production, or a huge opera.
Seth further refined his dance and performance abilities outside of the opera industry by bringing his powerful stage presence and musicality to national tours, Broadway, and Madison Square Garden. His work at the Met, where he portrayed each character with physicality, realism, and intense dedication, was distinguished by this flexibility. Few people could equal Seth's ability to bring life to the stage, whether in tragic or humorous parts.
People who knew Seth will remember him more for his compassion, kindness, and constant support of his coworkers than for his enormous professional achievements. He served as an inspiration to the entire group, a mentor to up-and-coming vocalists, and a trustworthy friend to his colleagues. His quiet confidence, effortless grace, and undeniable joy in the art of performance were hallmarks of his presence both onstage and in the practice room.
His departure has caused a deep hole in our hearts and within the Chorus family. The appreciation—for the decades of music, friendship, fun, and dedication that Seth generously shared with all of us—is as profound as the pain.
We are thinking of Seth's friends, family, and everyone who had the honor of getting to know and work with him. We welcome the community to join us in celebrating the life and legacy of a wonderful artist and cherished human being. Details of a memorial service will be revealed in the upcoming weeks.
Peace be with you, Seth. Your melody will endure in all of us even if your voice is mute.
