A Rockland man lost his life in a devastating head-on collision on U.S. Route 1 early Friday morning, while another driver was hurt.

According to the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office, the collision happened on September 5, 2025, at around 4:22 a.m., between the Montsweag Restaurant and the intersection of Mountain Road. After the collision, both of the involved vehicles caught fire.

According to investigators, a 2022 Toyota Tundra driven by Rockland resident Alex C. Colson, 38, was heading north when it veered over the centerline and into the southbound lane. Scott Rice, a 60-year-old Waldoboro resident, was driving a 2003 Freightliner box truck south when it crashed, but it was too late.

Colson was declared dead at the scene after suffering fatal injuries. After escaping his car, Rice was taken to Portland's Maine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Members of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office are handling crash reconstruction, while Deputy Alex Faith is in charge of the investigation. In addition to Bath Police, Topsham Police, and the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit, emergency personnel from Woolwich, Wiscasset, and West Bath Fire/Rescue also responded.

After around four hours of closure in both directions, U.S. Route 1 returned to traffic about 8:30 a.m.
