New York Obituary for Frank and Maureen Olton, Queens; Cause of Death: Bellerose, Queens The suspect in what Commissioner Jessica Tisch has called a "horrific double homicide, robbery, and fire" that killed an elderly couple in Queens earlier this week is 42-year-old Jamel McGriff, according to the NYPD.
FDNY firemen arrived to a fire at the apartment on Monday and found the victims, 76-year-old Frank Olton and his 77-year-old wife, Maureen, dead inside their blazing home. Sadly, what started out as a typical home fire has turned into a terrifying criminal inquiry.
Authorities claim that CCTV footage found at the scene demonstrates Frank Olton's voluntary admission of McGriff inside the house. For about five hours, McGriff stayed inside. Fire alarms were set off just minutes after he left, and the FDNY responded.
The couple's son, an EMT on active duty, reported the fire after receiving an emergency alert via the family's home security system. After finding both victims dead, responders concluded that the fire had been started on purpose.
According to police, the incident began as a targeted robbery that turned into a double murder and then arson, which was allegedly done to destroy evidence.
McGriff, who is regarded as armed and dangerous, is currently wanted on two counts of robbery, arson, and murder. Due to his criminal past, he is thought to have left the site of the crime right away.
During a press briefing Tuesday night, Commissioner Tisch underlined the case's gravity and urgency:
Two innocent persons were the victims of a purposeful, heartless act of violence in their own house. In order to track down and prosecute Jamel McGriff, we are use every resource at our disposal.
If you have any information regarding McGriff's whereabouts or the case, the NYPD is asking you to call 911 right now or use Crime Stoppers to provide anonymous tips by calling 1-800-577-TIPS. It is anticipated that surveillance photos will soon be made public to help identify him.
Several law enforcement agencies are currently involved in the continuing manhunt, and a citywide alert is currently in effect.
Neighbors recall Frank and Maureen Olton as generous, friendly individuals who had lived in Bellerose for decades, and the town is in mourning.
The inquiry into this matter is still ongoing. As further details become available, updates will be given.
Avoid approaching Jamel McGriff if you see him or have any information about where he is. Dial 911 right away.
