Obituary and Cause of Death for Matt Lee South, St. Paul, MN; Junior Economics Major and Football Player at St. Olaf College Die in a Fatal Shooting

 Matt Lee, a 20-year-old football player and junior economics student at St. Olaf College, has been named by authorities as the victim of the fatal shooting that occurred Friday morning.


The shooting happened at a house in the 300 block of 2nd Avenue South on September 12, 2025, at approximately 3:45 a.m. Lee was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police, while another male victim was taken to the hospital after suffering serious injuries.


A shelter-in-place order was imposed in the vicinity after the suspect, a 19-year-old St. Paul man, ran away from the scene. He was then taken into custody without any problems at around 5:45 a.m.

In a statement expressing their sorrow over Lee's passing, St. Olaf College highlighted both his influence on the school community and his function as a linebacker for the football team. "Student-athlete Matt Lee passed suddenly early Friday morning, and the entire St. Olaf community is grieving his loss," the college stated.


The College Ministry organized a campus event at Boe Memorial Chapel on Friday night to provide staff and students with a chance to unite in remembering.


The motivation and circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated. Potential charges against the suspect have not yet been revealed by the authorities.

As friends, teammates, and classmates recall Lee as a devoted athlete, student, and friend, his passing has shocked the communities of St. Olaf and South St. Paul.
