Pierre Mack, a MnDOT contractor, was struck and killed Wednesday morning in a deadly construction zone accident on northbound Interstate 35W, according to authorities.
The incident happened close to Burnsville Parkway just before nine in the morning, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Investigators said Mack was on foot when a boom truck that was operating inside the closed construction zone struck him while it was reversing.
Emergency personnel declared Mack dead at the spot, according to radio dispatches. According to officials, only authorized cars and personnel were present in the construction zone, which was closed to the public at the time of the tragedy.
The boom truck driver's identity has not been made public. There were no other recorded injuries.
The Minnesota State Patrol and occupational safety officials are still investigating the event, and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office was sent to the location.
The risks that contractors and workers working beside busy highways confront have been brought to light by this incident, which has sparked new worries about worker safety in construction zones.
