Smerer, Jeff Huron, Michigan Shooting in Port Huron After allegedly killing his 17-year-old son Kayleb Smerer

The kind of violence that leaves a community permanently scarred upended the predawn quiet of Thursday, September 11th, in an apartment complex in Port Huron. One kid was killed, two other children were struggling for their lives, and the family was irreparably damaged when a father allegedly turned a gun on his own children in an apartment on Glenview Court, where families were just starting to get up for work and school. Only the mother of the children and their older brother's valiant, desperate actions prevented the unimaginable horror from getting worse.

Following the horrifying events that occurred at his family's home close to the intersection of Krafft Road and 24th Avenue (M-25) at around 6 a.m., the Port Huron Police Department has announced that 44-year-old Jeff Smerer is in arrest. Kayleb Smerer, his 17-year-old son, who was just entering maturity, was declared deceased. Due to severe, potentially fatal injuries, his two younger siblings—a 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy—were sent to nearby hospitals and are currently in critical care.

The incident has rocked the close-knit community of Port Huron, leaving law enforcement authorities, friends, and neighbors struggling with the harsh reality of an unfathomable domestic tragedy.

A Morning That Becomes a Nightmare

Thursday morning started off like any other for the people who live in the Glenview Court apartment complex. The sky was just starting to lighten, the air was chilly, and the sounds were the gradual awakening of a community. But that tranquility was about to be severely ripped apart inside the Smerer family's residence.

Preliminary indications from law enforcement sources indicate that Jeff Smerer was involved in an altercation at around 6 a.m. Authorities claim that in the next moments, Smerer pulled out a gun and started shooting at his own kids. A precursor to the disaster that was taking place inside the flat was the abrupt, thunderous sound of gunfire that reverberated throughout the space.

His 17-year-old son Kayleb was fatally wounded. Additionally hit were the two younger children, whose identities are being kept secret because they are minors and victims of a terrible crime. Both the 12-year-old girl and the 13-year-old boy were left fighting for their lives after suffering severe injuries.

If not for the brave and prompt action of the children's mother and older brother, the carnage may have gone on. The two family members allegedly confronted and physically fought Jeff Smerer after hearing the mayhem break out, trying to stop him from firing any more bullets. Unquestionably, their acts, which were motivated by love and desperation in the midst of overwhelming horror, stopped the rampage and prevented more deaths, enabling them to call for assistance.

The Hasty Reaction

The apartment complex's initial 911 calls described gunfire and the sounds of a struggle. Within minutes, emergency medical personnel, Port Huron Police, and St. Clair County Sheriff's deputies arrived on the site, their sirens piercing the stillness of the morning. When they got there, the situation was chaotic and depressing.

The three juvenile victims were discovered by first responders with gunshot wounds. They started giving out life-saving assistance right away. In order to stabilize the two younger children for transportation, paramedics labored feverishly. Their injuries were so severe that a careful and quick evacuation was required. After being taken to McLaren Port Huron hospital, they were sent to pediatric trauma centers where teams of physicians and surgeons started the frantic battle to save their lives.
