Taylor Hanna SGU: In Honor of a Devoted Medical Student and Future Oncologist

 Taylor Hanna, a bright young medical student whose life was devoted to education, research, and helping others, passed so tragically. Her family, friends, and coworkers are in mourning. For those who knew Taylor, her untimely passing has left an incalculable hole in their hearts.


Taylor, a native of Stony Plain, Alberta, attended St. George's University School of Medicine and St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey, as an MD candidate in the class of 2026 and an MSc candidate in the class of 2024. She was working toward her goal of becoming a medical oncologist, which was motivated by her love of genetics, medical ethics, and cancer research.


Taylor, a proud alumnus of the University of Alberta's bilingual BSc program ('21), spent her undergraduate years actively involved in biomedical research. She oversaw and participated in numerous initiatives over the course of five years, which culminated to her first-author research paper. Her work included epidemiological and public health initiatives that addressed the cultural ramifications of healthcare delivery, as well as laboratory investigations into the genetics of peroxisome biogenesis abnormalities.

Taylor was motivated by a strong feeling of service and global citizenship in addition to her academic achievements. She frequently expressed her hope to one day support Doctors Without Borders, demonstrating her empathy and dedication to helping underprivileged areas.


Peers and friends recall Taylor as friendly, sympathetic, and incredibly supportive in addition to being intelligent and diligent. Those around her were inspired by her determination to use study and medicine to improve the world.

Taylor's family, friends, and the larger medical and academic world are all devastated by her demise. With a bright future ahead of her, she leaves a legacy of quality, tenacity, and compassion.
