The remains of Peyton Hughes, a missing college angler from Kentucky recuperated at Toledo Bend

In a heartbreaking turn of events, authorities found the body of 22-year-old Peyton Hughes, a member of Campbellsville University's kayak fishing team, from Toledo Bend Reservoir, which is located across the Texas–Louisiana border, on Friday morning.

After missing his travel companion on a pre-tournament fishing excursion, Hughes, a native of Kentucky, was reported missing on September 24, 2025. Officers from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) originally located Hughes' kayak, but they were unable to locate the young fisherman.

Sara Ashley Hughes, Hughes' mother, publicly expressed her sorrow and confirmed the recovery, saying, "Oh NOOO, my baby is gone." His body was found in the water this morning. My darling son is now with his father, who lost his life defending this nation. Adam and Peyton Hughes, you are loved! God, I am in so much pain!

Hughes was getting ready for the Bassmaster Kayak Series competition, which was set for September 27–28. TPWD and local workers conducted the search, combing the reservoir with boats and sophisticated equipment. Throughout the intense search, friends, relatives, and the larger kayak fishing community kept a close eye on updates.

The Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, or B.A.S.S., sent their sympathies, highlighting Hughes' commitment to the sport and the loss experienced by the competitive kayak fishing community. His loved ones recall him as a young guy whose life was sadly cut short, a dedicated son, and an avid angler.

As the Campbellsville University community grieves the loss of one of its most talented young athletes, investigators are still looking into Hughes' death.
