Tragic events occurred in Birmingham on Thursday night when 28-year-old Xavier Brandon Clark was shot and killed a few blocks from the famous Legion Field stadium. The Birmingham Police Department states that shortly after 11:30 p.m., officers were sent to the 1100 block of Graymont Avenue West in response to reports of gunfire that the city's Shot Spotter system had picked up.

Clark was found unconscious inside a car parked in an adjacent home's driveway when police arrived on the scene. Despite their prompt response, Birmingham Fire & Rescue officials declared him dead at the site. Residents were shocked to learn of yet another act of gun violence in their neighborhood when they woke up on Friday morning.

Since then, investigators have verified that Shot Spotter technology captured many shots being fired during the event. Forensic teams and detectives marked shell casings, documented the crime scene, and searched the area for evidence for several hours. As part of the ongoing investigation, two cars were removed off the scene early Friday.

The motivation behind the shooting is still unknown, and no suspects are in custody at this time. Investigators are looking through CCTV footage from surrounding residences and businesses and investigating every clue they can find. Given how crowded the neighborhood is, particularly at that hour of the night, police think someone might have heard or seen something that could help identify the gunman.

Anyone with information regarding the event is encouraged to come forward by the Birmingham Police Department. Members of the public can call the BPD Homicide Unit directly at 205-254-1764 or call 205-254-7777 to provide anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers.
