East Chicago Police Department Obituary for John Champion Jr.; Cause of Death: Homicide Investigation

 The terrible death of 25-year-old John Champion Jr. of Chicago, who was tragically stabbed during an altercation early Tuesday morning, has left the East Chicago community in mourning.


At approximately 2:37 a.m. on October 7, 2025, officers with the East Chicago Police Department responded to an apartment located at 3504 Pennsylvania Avenue (Apt. 89). When they arrived, they discovered John unconscious and suffering from a lower abdominal knife wound. After being taken to St. Catherine Hospital, he was tragically declared dead despite attempts to save his life.


After confessing to stabbing John after a domestic argument that turned violent, authorities arrested 22-year-old Jatavia Miller of East Chicago on the spot.

To ascertain all the facts surrounding this tragic event, the Lake County Sheriff's Crime Scene Investigators (C.S.I.) and the Lake County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force are conducting a comprehensive investigation.


As they deal with this tragic loss, the East Chicago Police Department sends its sincerest sympathies to John Champion Jr.'s family and loved ones.
