The community at the University of North Florida (UNF) is in deep sorrow at the death of Hunter Ford, a gifted and intelligent student who perished in a motorbike accident close to campus on Wednesday night.

Ford, an information technology major, was well-known for his commitment to helping others through his work in the university's Information Technology Services Department in addition to his stellar academic record.

Just a short distance from the UNF campus, the deadly collision happened along Town Center Parkway, close to the Chick-fil-A restaurant and the Tropia Way entrance, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO).

According to investigators, an Audi vehicle tried to turn left onto Tropia Way while Ford was riding his Harley west. Ford suffered serious injuries when the two cars collided. He was taken to a local hospital by emergency personnel, but he passed away from his wounds not long after they arrived.

Students, instructors, and staff at UNF were in a state of profound shock as the devastating news swiftly traveled around the campus. A university spokesman said in a formal statement that they were deeply saddened by the death.

The statement said, "Hunter will be remembered for his gentle and brilliant attitude." "We provide the Osprey community counseling tools and offer our sincere condolences to Hunter's family and friends."

Hunter Ford had a profound effect on campus. In addition to his academic pursuits, he was instrumental in providing technical support for UNF's technological systems, helping both academics and students. Ford, who was well-known for his brilliance, inventiveness, and readiness to lend a hand to others, personified the spirit of cooperation and inquiry that UNF aims to promote.

Ford, a native of Jacksonville, first became interested in technology, innovation, and design while attending Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, where he graduated in 2022. His passion continued throughout his stay at UNF, where he soon established himself as a well-liked and respected student.

He received praise for his accomplishments in 2023 after taking first place at UNF's AI For Good Hackathon, a contest aimed at promoting the use of AI to practical issues.

Along with his academic endeavors, Ford founded the UNF Drone Club, a student club dedicated to aerial technology and remote-controlled drone racing.

Under his direction, the group developed into a gathering place for students who were curious about the nexus between computer science, robotics, and aviation. He was characterized by friends and classmates as a visionary student who was enthusiastic about learning and encouraging others to investigate uncharted technological territory.

JSO has not made any announcements on possible charges or contributing causes as the crash investigation is still ongoing. In the meanwhile, the UNF community is uniting to honor Hunter Ford's legacy. In light of his generosity, intelligence, and desire to positively influence others, students have started planning monuments and posting condolences online.
