Lorman, Mississippi — Law enforcement is looking into a shooting that took place on Saturday evening at Alcorn State University located in Claiborne County, Mississippi. This disturbing event has caused considerable fear within the university community, which led to an immediate lockdown and a significant response from various law enforcement agencies in the area.

Officials from the university stated that an emergency alert was broadcasted following reports of gunfire on campus. Students, faculty, and staff were advised to find safety and stay in secure areas until further instructions were given. The alert, disseminated via the institution's emergency notification system, encouraged everyone on campus to focus on their safety and await official updates before leaving their designated shelters.

In a statement provided by Alcorn State University, officials highlighted the gravity of the situation, advising the community to remain in their present location until an official “all-clear” announcement was made. “A shooting has been reported on campus. If you are on campus, seek shelter immediately. Do not leave your secure location until given an all-clear by Campus Police,” stated the message.

Local, state, and campus law enforcement swiftly arrived at the location to look into the events leading up to the reported gunfire. By Saturday night, officials had not disclosed any information regarding victims or suspects connected to the shooting. Police units were observed patrolling the vicinity, blocking access points and securing campus buildings to safeguard those who were in lockdown.

Authorities from the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and campus police are collaborating to find out what caused the incident. Students present on campus during the event described feelings of confusion and anxiety as alarms blared and university notifications instructed them to secure their doors.

While information from Alcorn State University remains sparse, a separate and equally troubling shooting incident occurred near Jackson State University (JSU) in Hinds County around the same time. Law enforcement confirmed that gunfire erupted close to the tailgate area of the JSU stadium on West Street, where large crowds had assembled for weekend activities.

As per authorities, a child sustained injuries from gunfire during the shooting near the JSU stadium. Officers from the Jackson Police Department (JPD) quickly transported the injured child to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) for emergency medical care. The hospital has not yet provided information regarding the victim’s condition.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Capitol Police and the Jackson Police Department, are currently working together to investigate the factors surrounding the JSU shooting. Officials have not shared any details about suspects, and as of late Saturday night, no arrests have been made. Investigators have called on any witnesses to come forward with information that may help in identifying those involved.

Law enforcement has also directed everyone in the vicinity of the JSU stadium to leave the area without delay in order to permit investigators to protect the crime scene. Fencing has been established to limit entry while forensic personnel gather evidence and examine surveillance recordings from local areas.

The events at Alcorn State and Jackson State University are both ongoing and evolving inquiries. Authorities are consistently stressing that ensuring the safety of the community is their top concern, encouraging both residents and students to stay alert and adhere to all directives from the police. Further updates will be shared as officials make more confirmed information available concerning the ongoing investigations.
