After a car collided with worshippers and a security guard was stabbed outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road, Crumpsall, this morning, a serious incident has been reported in north Manchester.
According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), they received a call on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 9.31 a.m. Within three minutes, armed officers came and announced Operation Plato, the national emergency protocol for suspected acts of terrorism.
GMP claims that a car was intentionally driven toward members of the public before the suspect got out and started stabbed people. Minutes afterward, the suspect was shot by armed cops. People think he is dead.
Four individuals were treated on the spot by North West Ambulance Service paramedics for injuries brought on by the car and the knife. Since then, two individuals have passed away, according to authorities.
Worshippers had assembled at the synagogue for services on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, when the attack occurred.
Medical facilities throughout Greater Manchester, including Rochdale Infirmary, Salford Royal, Fairfield General, and Royal Oldham, were placed into lockdown after the event. Increased protection was also mentioned by a number of neighborhood schools and community centers.
Armed officers on the scene cautioned onlookers to leave the area since the assailant may have possessed an explosive device, so a bomb disposal team was set up as a precaution. There was no explosive.
Online footage shows the man lying on the ground next to the synagogue gates, surrounded by armed police. Officers can be heard yelling concerns about a potential explosive at one point. Before the police opened fire and brought the man down, he tried to get up.
"This was a very serious situation, but people can be assured that the immediate danger has been dealt with fast and properly," said Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester. On these most holy of days, our sympathies are with the victims, their families, and the Jewish community in Manchester.
After being briefed on the situation, Prime Minister Keir Starmer is returning to the UK from the European Political Community session in Copenhagen. This afternoon, a COBR emergency committee meeting has been called to order in London.
GMP said in a statement:
At 9.31 a.m., a member of the public reported that he had seen a car being driven towards people and that one guy had been stabbed. This led police to the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, located on Middleton Road in Crumpsall. At 9.37 a.m., GMP declared PLATO and a significant incident. At 9.38 a.m., GMP weapons officers opened fire. The perpetrator is thought to be one individual who was shot. Four members of the public are receiving medical attention for their wounds.
