On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Grant M. Freeze, a beloved Nicolet High School student and exceptional swimmer, died in a serious crash in Mequon. The communities of Cedarburg, Fox Point, Milwaukee, and Ozaukee County youth hockey are grieving his passing.
The collision happened on West Pioneer Road near North Klug Lane shortly after 3:45 p.m., according to the Mequon Police Department. According to investigators, a 57-year-old man's eastbound dump truck was struck by a westbound SUV driven by a 16-year-old boy who had crossed the middle line.
The Southern Ozaukee Fire Department's emergency personnel showed up on the scene promptly. After being pulled from the wreckage, the teenage driver—later named as Freeze—had to be flown to Froedtert Hospital with potentially fatal injuries by Flight for Life. He died later that night despite receiving critical medical attention.
Despite having serious injuries, the dump truck driver was also sent to Froedtert Hospital and is anticipated to live.
While the Ozaukee County Crash Reconstruction Team investigated, West Pioneer Road was stopped for about four hours. Road closure management and cleanup were aided by the Emergency Management and Ozaukee County Highway Department staff.
Freeze was well known in the Ozaukee youth hockey community as a beloved teammate and friend in addition to being a gifted swimmer and committed student-athlete at Nicolet High School. The several teams and organizations he was a part of are deeply saddened by his untimely death.
Coaches, friends, teammates, and classmates have been sending condolence and remembering messages, recalling Grant's tenacity in the pool, his peer leadership, and his kind, supportive demeanor both within and outside of sports.
Local authorities are still investigating the crash.
