When emergency personnel reached the scene of the collision at around 4:45 a.m., they discovered Basden's Ford Fusion partially stopped on the far-left side of the road. Her sister was struck by other cars engaged in the event and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

According to preliminary inquiries, Basden had pulled over to switch drivers with her sister. When a 2003 Toyota Camry from the far-left lane collided with the Fusion and then swerved into a 2021 Toyota Camry, the vehicle was primarily in the travel lane.

Basden suffered a catastrophic injury in the incident, and she was pronounced dead at the spot. Her sister was admitted to the hospital to receive treatment for her wounds, which included a foot fracture. No other severe injuries were reported at this time.
