PHOENIX, ARIZONA — Authorities confirmed late Friday night that a man who reportedly threatened a woman with a knife has died after being shot by police near 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road.

The Phoenix Police Department reported that officers arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m. after receiving several emergency calls about a man with a knife creating a disturbance by threatening a woman outside a nearby apartment complex. Witnesses described a scene filled with tension as law enforcement quickly encircled the area to contain the individual and ensure the safety of local residents.

Upon their arrival, police encountered the suspect who was still wielding the knife and moving towards a visibly distressed woman. Officers issued numerous commands for him to drop the weapon. However, the man reportedly did not comply and continued to approach her despite the repeated warnings.

As the conflict intensified, law enforcement officers fired their weapons to neutralize the threat. The suspect was hit and fell to the ground immediately. Officers on the scene rendered first aid while also calling for medical help. Paramedics from the Phoenix Fire Department arrived within minutes and took the man to a local hospital for urgent care.

Later, officials confirmed that the suspect had died from his injuries at the hospital. The woman who was involved had no physical injuries but was understandably shaken. She was taken to a safe location and later interviewed by detectives as part of the ongoing inquiry. Authorities noted that she is receiving support services from the crisis response team of the department.

Police officials underscored that the shooting was a reaction to an immediate life-threatening situation. A spokesperson for the department stated, “Our officers faced a scenario where a person with a dangerous weapon was actively endangering another person.” They acted to ensure her safety and avert any additional harm.

The investigation has been handed over to the Phoenix Police Department's Special Investigations Unit and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. This inquiry will involve a comprehensive examination of body camera footage, witness accounts, and forensic evidence to clarify the exact events that led to the fatal shooting.

Residents in the vicinity told reporters that they heard multiple gunshots followed by police sirens and shouting. “It happened so fast,” recalled one resident. “Police cars were everywhere within moments. They were shouting for someone to drop the knife, and then I heard the gunfire.” Others mentioned that the neighborhood is usually quiet, expressing their disbelief that such an incident could occur in their community.

In accordance with departmental regulations, the officers who were part of the shooting incident have been assigned to administrative leave while the investigation is underway. The Phoenix Police Department mentioned that this is a common practice in all incidents involving officers to maintain openness and responsibility.

The name of the man who passed away has not been disclosed by the authorities, as they await the notification of family members. The vicinity surrounding 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road was cordoned off for several hours while detectives gathered evidence. Officials have confirmed to the community that there is no persistent threat and that the investigation is actively moving forward. The department has assured that more information will be provided once the assessment is concluded, emphasizing its dedication to openness and the safety of the community.
