Fatal Accident in North-Central Kansas Claims the Life of 84-Year-Old Mary Dubbert

Tipton, KS — A tragic event on a rural stretch of Kansas Highway 181 close to Tipton has caused the tight-knit community to mourn the loss of 84-year-old Mary Dubbert. The fatal crash occurred late Tuesday morning when a northbound 1991 Buick Century attempted to pass a semi-truck in a no-passing zone.

At approximately 11:21 a.m., the Buick, driven by 69-year-old Brian Christianson from Hunter, Kansas, lost control after the semi-trailer, a 2005 International, drifted into the opposite lane while negotiating a curve. In an effort to avoid a collision, Christianson steered the Buick back into the roadway, but the vehicle struck the side of the semi, leading to the trailer tipping over into the ditch on the east side.

Passenger Mary Dubbert was declared deceased at the accident scene. Her husband, 52-year-old Ronald Dubbert, who was operating the semi and is from Hebron, Nebraska, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit for treatment. Christianson, who was wearing his seatbelt, appeared to have escaped the crash without any injuries.

Investigation Underway

Authorities from the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) are examining the circumstances of the accident, particularly looking into whether the semi's crossing into the opposite lane during the curve, the no-passing zone, or the Buick’s overtaking attempt played a role. Conditions were clear at the time of the incident, but investigators are reviewing factors such as road curvature and visibility to better understand the causes behind the crash.

Emergency responders were quick to act, closing a portion of Highway 181 to clear debris and analyze the situation. Local fire, medical, and law enforcement teams all played roles in the response effort.

A Community in Mourning

Mary Dubbert, remembered fondly by friends and neighbors as a kindhearted and faith-driven person, is deeply missed by the residents of Tipton. Her loss has greatly affected the community, prompting many to offer support to Ronald Dubbert as he recovers from his injuries.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to pay attention to no-passing areas, slow down when nearing curves, and remain vigilant while navigating rural roads, emphasizing that familiar routes may still conceal unforeseen dangers.

The investigation is still in progress, with officials continuing to examine skid marks, vehicle damage, and other evidence before making decisions regarding any potential citations or charges.
