Arkansas Community Mourns the Loss of Unidentified Manila High School Students Injured in the Lake City Incident

The Manila community is currently facing one of its most difficult times following the devastating incident on Highway 18 last Friday night, which led to the fatalities of four people and resulted in six students from Manila High School being hospitalized. As families mourn and wait with hope and prayer, the town has come together, highlighting the deep bonds that exist among its residents, educational institutions, and youth.

Among those impacted were two students from Manila High School, whose names have not yet been released to the public. Their absence is already noticeable in the school environment, with empty chairs, teammates missing during practice sessions, and friends dealing with the abrupt changes life can bring.

Teachers describe the students as bright, caring, and full of promise. Their classmates remember them as friends who promoted inclusivity, brought happiness to everyday experiences, and were there not only for their studies but also for those around them. The grief from their loss extends far beyond the school walls.

Today, Manila High School witnessed staff and students gathering in quiet groups — some clasped hands, others shed tears, while some simply sat together, seeking comfort in each other’s presence amid the sorrow. Counselors, teachers, and local spiritual leaders have dedicated themselves to supporting students who are facing grief that many have never experienced previously.

Prayers and Hope for the Injured

At this time, six students remain hospitalized, including Brady Curtwright, whose family has sadly reported that there has been no sign of brain activity since his admission. His parents, Ashley and Brian Curtwright, conveyed that they feel enveloped by the prayers and loving messages directed to them.

"I find myself struggling to express my thoughts... I appreciate the love that each of you has for my beloved son," his mother stated. "I request your prayers. What God wills is beyond our understanding."

On social media, both current students and alumni have updated their profile pictures to show school colors, added prayer icons, or reminisced about shared experiences with the affected students — inside jokes, football highlights, choir events, and the small yet meaningful moments that now hold greater significance.

A Town That Holds Together

Local businesses, faith groups, and community individuals have stepped up with words of comfort. A notable message came from Champion Coffee, which has resonated throughout the community:

"Our hearts are incredibly heavy today… Let us hold onto the belief that God is close to those who are grieving… Manila, let’s continue to support these families. Let’s show each other profound love."

Plans for candlelight vigils are currently being considered; pastors have invited the community for times of quiet contemplation; educators are creating safe spaces for students to express their emotions, whether through talking, crying, or simply being together.

In a close-knit community, sorrow is never solely felt by one family — and Manila is once again proving that truth.
