 The Rice University community is mourning the premature loss of Claire Tracy, a sophomore from Wiess College, who passed away yesterday. An email sent by Bridget Gorman, the undergraduate dean, confirmed this heartbreaking news and expressed condolences to Claire's family, friends, and classmates.

Claire, originally from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, left behind a legacy as a bright, enthusiastic, and highly involved member of the Rice community, making a lasting impression on everyone she met.

“Claire was a finance major with strong friendships and a vibrant character,” Dean Gorman shared in her message to the student community. “We offer our sincere condolences to Claire’s family and all who had the chance to know her during this tough time.”

In addition to her finance studies, Claire was pursuing a minor in entrepreneurship, demonstrating her thirst for knowledge, ambition, and dedication to both personal and professional development. Her academic commitment exemplified her desire for excellence and her aspiration to make a meaningful contribution to her future career.

Claire was deeply involved in various aspects of the Rice community. She contributed her time and energy to organizations such as Rice Women in Business, the Social Impact Committee, and the Rice Eclipse Finance Board.

During her first year, she also participated in the university’s soccer team, reflecting her athletic talent, teamwork, and leadership skills both on the field and in other areas. Those who worked with her remember her as a passionate, driven, and dependable teammate who consistently inspired others to pursue greatness.

Wiess Magister Flavio Cunha described her passing as a “difficult time” for the college, reaching out through an email that included information on available support resources for students. In his annual State of the University address, President Reggie DesRoches recognized Tracy’s impact with a moment of silence, stating, “She shared a deep bond with numerous students and was esteemed for embodying the Rice spirit.”

The university has encouraged both students and staff to take advantage of the support services offered, such as the Wellbeing Office, the Rice Counseling Center, and the Employee Assistance Program, acknowledging the profound impact her absence has had on the campus community.
