According to the Omaha Police Department, authorities arrived at the location shortly after 4:15 p.m. on Sunday in response to an incident occurring near Meadow Drive and 91st Avenue. Preliminary reports indicate that a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling west veered off the roadway, striking both a light pole and a tree. Emergency personnel performed CPR on Meneely at the scene before he was taken to a hospital with severe injuries. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries the following day. The inquiry into the accident is still ongoing.

The news of Meneely’s passing has significantly affected the Nebraska wrestling community and other circles. Nebraska USA Wrestling released a statement paying tribute to his legacy: “Todd Meneely, a notable figure from Skutt Catholic and UNO, was involved in a serious vehicle accident recently. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Meneely’s accomplishments in the sport of wrestling were extraordinary. A graduate of V.J. and Angela Skutt Catholic High School as well as the University of Nebraska at Omaha, he was a three-time NCAA Division II national champion representing Nebraska–Omaha. His remarkable career record of 85–5, his induction into the Division II Hall of Fame, and his title as the 2009 NCAA Division II Wrestler of the Year solidified his reputation as one of the premier athletes in the state.

Nonetheless, those who were close to him assert that Todd’s impact extended well beyond his accolades. Friends, teammates, and coaches described him as a fierce competitor, distinguished by his generous spirit—someone who exemplified discipline, courage, and loyalty. He was commonly referred to as a “Gladiator” and a “Maverick,” reflecting his daring style in competition and the inspirational role he played within the UNO wrestling program.

Peers depicted him as a dedicated father and reliable friend, whose guidance and support reached far beyond the sport of wrestling. One former teammate shared, “Todd was not just a wrestling coach—he taught valuable life lessons. He lifted everyone around him.”
